With the IP-based and broadband architecture of telecommunication services, Metropolitan Area Network is becoming increasingly important in the entire communication network. Carrier Ethernet is one of the hotspot technologies in MAN, which strengthens in reliability, scalability, QoS guarantee and OAM aspects compared with traditional Ethernet. Among them, Ethernet ring protection technology is a low-cost carrier-grade Ethernet solution for high reliability. Ring network technology can also reduce the occupation of optical fiber resources, simplify network topology and network management.This paper analyzes the Ethernet ring technology, in view of the deficiencies of existing technology, it proposes an improved protection mechanism for Ethernet ring network, which can effectively improve network robustness and bandwidth utilization of ring network. This article also presents a suitable fairness control mechanism for Ethernet ring network, so that all the access nodes can contend for network resources with no partiality. Its main tasks are:1. This paper makes a further analysis on current development of MAN and MAN-related technologies. Moreover, it points out the advantages and limitations of ethernet technology from the aspects of technical principle, application scenarios, implementation methods, etc.2. This paper proposes an improved ring network mechanism, and its main features are: (1) Under normal circumstances, we block the slave node instead of the master node in the ring network, which can increase network throughput capacity up to 100 percent and reduce the number of passing-by node when the loop is in normal state. (2) Introduce sub-master node to avoid the entire ring fail when the master node fails, improve the availability of the ring. (3) The master node can perceive the topology of the ring, adjust the loop according to the requirement. (4) This paper presents an improved hierarchical ring mechanism, which can improve the ring network scalability to meet the needs of MAN.3. Ethernet is connectionless network techonology which lack of fairness mechanism. Through a variety of QoS technologies, high-priority traffic can achieve better QoS, but for low-priority traffic which lacks of QoS guarantees, the impact is conspicuous. This article has proposed a fairness control method which suited to Ethernet ring network based on existing algorithm. The algorithm is simple, easy to achieve and cost fewer resources. The simulation results show that each node in the ring occupied fairly in the network resources.
