Due to the development of the semiconductor technology and the digital communication technology, various wireless communication technologies have been presented in recent years. In these new technologies, UWB (Ultra Wide Band) is an outstanding high data rate transmission over the short distance wireless communication technology. It originally served in the military, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved for commercial use. With the fast speed, low power consumption and high security, it is perfect for Wireless Personal Area Network. As an important part of UWB wireless transmitter, the study of UWB PA received attention.This paper discusses the classification of RF power amplifiers, mainly focus on the basic structure of linear power amplifier, and the comparison of performance of each classes power amplifier; Followed by a discussion of the power amplifier performance parameters, and gives some linearization method. Then it describes the key technology of RF power amplifier design, and discusses the various defects of CMOS technology design power amplifiers. Next, it introduces the circuit design, analyzes the cascode circuit structure, input and output characteristics which used in circuit. At last, the matching network design, firstly introduces basic matching circuits, then introduces input circuit and the output circuit matching network design, Finally achieved a power amplifier works in UWB.The PA was designed in SMIC 0.18um RF CMOS technology and simulation by Cadence Specter RF, an improved DCCS topology is adopted to increase the performance of circuit. The simulation results indicate that the gain of the PA at the 3-11GHz is more than 7.5dB; the power consumption is about 12dBm, basically meets the design requirements. Finally, the layout of the UWB PA is completed by using the layout tool of Cadence Virtuoso Layout Editor.
