With the rapid development of mobile phone industry, multimedia function has become its standard feature. However, most low configuration mobile phones don't have any or have very limited multimedia functions, constrained by processing capability and price of baseband chips. In order to maintain competitiveness of low configuration baseband chip, handset design houses and baseband chip manufacturers dedicated to enhance multimedia function of baseband chips with low configuration.The dissertation investigates the series products of baseband chip manufacturer MediaTek, and researches mainly on the hardware and software architecture of baseband chip MT6223D platform. MT6223D baseband chip is designed to meet the requirements of voice phone market and has very limited multimedia functions. A design of multimedia function coprocessor, extended through external memory interface, is proposed in order to enhance the multimedia processing ability of MT6223D. The multimedia function coprocessor is composed of sensor interface, image processing module, JPEG codec module, USB device controller, SD card controller and etc, which helps MT6223D to meet the demands of a multimedia baseband chip. The software drivers for coprocessor are implemented in MT6223D operate system, and the videotape process is also improved so as to adapt to the usages of coprocessor.
