Heterogeneous network is one of the characteristics of next-generation mobile communication systems. The future mobile communication networks will include a variety of wireless access technologies, and which will offer different coverage, throughput and QoS and soon. The complement of these technologies in performance makes heterogeneous network convergence an inevitable trend. With the rapid development of communications technologies and wireless networks, along with the popularity of various mobile terminals and the emergence of new mobile service and applications, the requirement of mobility is increasing. In the heterogeneous network environment, the network access selection is to be an important research topic. The methods for how the terminal selects the most appropriate and most effective radio bearer in a variety of complex environments, and it will enable the users to maintain accessing to the best network and get the most satisfactory service.This paper analyzes the network interface selection-related technologies in heterogeneous network environment, including:the current research status on network interface selection issues and Dual Stack Mobile IP protocol flow. For the problem of network interface selection when the terminal initiating sessions or handoff process in heterogenous network environment, we design a novel network interface selection schema based on QoS requirements with Dual Stack Mobile IPv6 protocol. By introducing mechanisms of network status detection, network QoS prediction and decision-making, the schema can optimize the process of network interface selection process in initiating conversation and handoff process in the DSMIP protocol. Under Linux system we realized network interface selection experimental platform in heterogeneous environment. On the platform by testing the handoff performance of data transfer using TCP/UDP protocol, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in a heterogeneous network environment, and the extension programms in heterogeneous network environment is feasible.
