Network topology management, the basic function of IP network management, focuses on network topology discovery, updating and configuring management information. Due to the rapid development of Internet technology, the network scale is rapidly expanding, which brings the shortage of IP address and disadvantages of providing quality services. The research of IPv6 technology is a task which brooks no delay. However, as IPv6 address has a wider address space, and modified many protocol fields, the topolgy discovery technology applied to IPv4 is not suitable for IPv6 any more. This brings difficulty to network toplogy management. Especially in the transition phase from IPv4 to IPv6, the new network elements, such as the dual stack nodes, the tunnels and the NAT, make the network topology discovery more difficult. Therefore, it is a realistic problem for topology discovery for IPv4 and IPv6 coexisting networks. In this paper, the current trend towards transition technologies are analyzed firstly, and then the existing methods of network topology discovery are presented and compared. In the project implementation process, we choose SNMP and SNMPv6 as network topology discovery technologies, which is the trend of the future network topology discovery. Next, the background of the project is described, framework of this system is introduced and the implementation of each layer is analysed in details. Finally, basic function testing is done through simulated networks.
