With the development of the computer network technology, the network scale is growing, the network complexity and heterogeneity is higher. In order to manage the network effectively, researchers studied a variety of network management methods. Network topology automatic discovery and visualization is not only the important basis and reference for the network management, but also important reference to realize fault quickly found and accurate positioning. This paper analyzes the existing network topology discovery method, improves and realizes new algorithms.The paper firstly introduces the basic concept of network topology discovery and the status of latest topology discovery research and its significance; Secondly, the paper introduces the topology discovery method, describes the data link layer network topology discovery methods such as STL, AFT and LLDP, highlight the network layer topology discovery method, including DNS, ICMP, the SNMP protocol, and other analysis method of topology discovery, indicates their advantages and disadvantages and applicable scope; Thirdly, the paper designs and realizes a topology discovery method based on ICMP, combing multithreading technology to achieve topology information acquisition module, then tests the method in Xidian university campus network and draws the network topology graph; Fourthly, the paper designs and realizes a topological information collection method based on SNMP protocol, and verifies the method in the network. Finally, the paper summarizes the full text, and prospects the next step work.
