With the development of the technology of computer networks and the worldwide popularity of Internet, the scale of computer networks is getting bulky and complex. Therefore, the technique of the computer networks management has become a very important issue. The network topology, which is one of the network management's basic functions, is very important of its technology researches and implementations.This paper mainly focused on the analysis and research of the algorithms and implementations of IP networks topology discovery, and the aim of it is to improve the efficiency and application of IP network topology discovery.Topology discovery before was mostly based on the SNMP protocol, but the SNMP itself is weak in the support of real time, and the spending is too big. So this paper puts forward a multi-thread and asynchronous network topology discovery method which is based on the SNMP/ICMP. Because of the hierarchy of network structure, it divides the network topology search into 2 levels, and the key point is to improve the speed and application of this method.In this paper, first, the author makes an introduction on the technology of IP networks topology discovery including the IP network information model which bases on the MIB information model. Then the author analyzes the multi-thread algorithms of topology discovery in detail based on the SNMP/ICMP protocol, and makes compares with other common tools and means of topology discovery, and make improvements also. At last, the author introduces the practice in a certain project.
