Optical fiber communication systems towards the large capacity, high rate and long distance direction makes fiber properties defects which are nonlinear effect, polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and so on neglected are the main factors which restrict the capacity upgrade and transmission distance system. So it can't be neglected any more and it's very important significance to research the reason for PMD, PMD's mechanism, influence on Fiber optic cable and fiber links, measurement, control and fiber compensation methods.Aiming at PMD, I adopt the principal state of polarization method combining frequency scanning method and poincare sphere method, which can measure PMD accurately and efficiently. Through two polarization controller(PC1 and PC2) find the principle states of polarization. The tunable laser wavelength range is from 1530nm to 1610nm. When measuring, I choice optical fibers awared of PMD as measurement object, compare it with the measurements, but also verify the principal state of polarization method. For the convenience of practical applications, I improve the existing programs and achieve the single-ended measurement which is light source and measuring device on the same side. Comparing the final measurements, I analysis the result and get some conclusions.
