The arrival of information age has promoted the further development of the optic fiber communication. Regarding optic fiber, the main factors which restrain system performance include optic fiber loss, chromatic dispersion (CD) and the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) attend gradually. The invention of the optic fiber amplifier and maturity of compensation technology of the CD can solve the problem of optic fiber loss and CD. So, with transfer rate of the system being higher, the influence of PMD on the system is more outstanding. While optic fibers laid before transmit high speed data, especially in practical wave divided multi-access (WDM) system, PMD must be considered. This thesis mainly research PMD emulator (PMDE) and its influence on eight channels WDM system.First we introduce the concept and cause of PMD, high-order PMD and the concept of second- and three-order PMD. Then we simulate two kinds of PMDE: polarization maintaining fiber plus rotating connector (P type) and birefringent crystal plus polarization controller (B type). Finally we emulate the influence of PMD on eight channels WDM system, the influence factors of WDM system and the influence of high-order group velocity dispersion (GVD) and non-linear effect on WDM by means of split-step Fourier transform, obtained: With the section number increasing, no matter the distribution of first-or second-order PMD, both of two emulators tend to the distribution of theory even more. The P type can emulate second-order PMD better than the B type, but B type can emulate first-order PMD better than the P type. Within the range of certain precision, we need to choose section numbers of PMDE reasonably. PMD can influence WDM system greatly. Exceeds gauss pulse without chirp (exponent number is 1.436) can restrain PMD. High-order GVD and non-linear effect can also influence the system greatly.
