Research On Reserve Service In University Library

One of the primary tasks of university libraries is providing reference information and related services; and reserve services is the most direct, concrete and important manifestation. In the new network environment, how can library use modern information technology to transfer all kinds of traditional media resources into digital resources and achieve the effective integration of digital resources, and all aspects of curriculum and teaching, also maintaining the traditional reserve services? Electronic reserve services are the best way to achieve the goal. It can create an ideal learning environment and a brand new learning style of students which can fully reflect the main role of students. It can reform.the traditional teaching structure and educational means to achieve the purpose of cultivating innovative talents.The purpose of this research is revealing the status of university libraries providing reserve services, comparing the gap between libraries in China and United States, exploring the attitudes of teachers and students to reserve service, hoping that Chinese university libraries can learn from foreign libraries, provide a high level of reserve services with their own conditions and characteristics. Also this article may able to be a reference to carry out electronic reserve services or not.The objects of this research include American university libraries ranked top 15 on US News 2011, Chinese university libraries ranked top 10 on Chinese Alumni 2011 and five other libraries, also use specific applications in the library of the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing university center of Chinese and American Studies as the case study, using of field overview, telephone interview, surveys, web browsing and other research methods. The research demonstrated several results. First, library users hope to reach high-quality academic reference services. Second, the services are not really embedded in teaching, for the breadth and depth of using of students and teachers is not enough? Finally, this research summary and analysis the main factors that restricting reserve services in domestic universities and make some suggestions and outlook.The first chapter introduces the background, goal and method of the research. Through the collation and analysis of the literatures, this research summarizes the need for reserve services, advantages of electronic reserve services, construction overview of electronic reserve services in China and foreign countries, and the main problems existing, also points out the deficiency of past researches and the innovation of this research.The second chapter mainly talks about the course reserve service. It defines the traditional reserves and electronic reserves, summarizes the method, process and main points of traditional reserve service; and introduces the features and development, also the common electronic reserve systems and the system assessments.The third chapter compares the electronic reserve systems in 15 Chinese universities and 15 American universities, summarizes their service characteristics, and points out the gap between.The fourth chapter introduces in details the status of reserve service in the library of Center of Chinese-American Studies of Nanjing University. It investigates the responses of teachers and students by survey and points out the problems existing.The fifth chapter explores the main factors that obstruct the development of reserve service in domestic universities by the poll of library salon, also summarizes some suggestions for the construction of reserve service.Finally, this research emphasizes that domestic universities should put efforts to carry out course reserve service. This service is reserve service that base on content, which can really embed in teaching. In addition, it makes some outlook of the integration and personalization of reserve service.
