Ethernet technology has been developing much faster than ever before. It has a dominant position in LAN because of its flexible, low-cost and high-speed. With new technologies emerging, the deploy field of Ethernet technology extends into the metro area networks gradually, forming the metro Ethernet networks. VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) as one of new type of Ethernet technologys, which takes the advantages of Ethernet and MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) technology, and has great prospect in metro Ethernet networks. It can connect the customer networks in different regions to be an emulated LAN, provide multipoint VPN services layer on the public network.At present, China promotes the network convergence vigorously, metro Ethernet network bears the services such as voice over IP (VoIP), internet protocol television (IPTV) has been necessity. These high-quality services demand higher reliability network, and transient network stoppage could cause the service interruption. It has been a new challenge for VPLS network too. So the fault treating rapidly in VPLS network to improve network protection becomes particularly pivotal. In carrier-class Ethernet, order to ensure the normal working of the services, the time of protection switching must be less than 50ms.This paper mainly studied the protection switching techniques in VPLS network. Follows are the main parts of this paper.1.First of all, interduce the basic principles of MPLS, and analysis the principle of VPN based on MPLS technology, proved the superiority of VPLS network on the based of contrast, discussed current situation and development of the protection switching technology in VPLS network.2.The basic institution of VPLS network and the realization of traditional VPLS network ware introduced. Analysis the changing of LSP tunnel causes the reconstruction of pseudo wires. Point out the focuses on implementing LSP Tunnel fast switching was to avoid the reconstruction of the pseudo wires.3.The way to make use of MPLS traffic engineering fast reroute technology protecting the backbone in VPLS network is analysed. In order to achieving the unterruped of virtual link connection, backup tunnel in the VPLS network was pre-established to protect critical links and nodes. When fault occured, forward traffic switchs to the backup link quickly, and keep the original tunnel status UP. Apply the BFD fault detection in protection switching for the protection switching within 50msultimately, whitch could fast detect link failures and inform link switch. 4.The expansibility of the VPLS network was considered, introduced the H-VPLS network model. Design and implement the H-VPLS access network link protect by the link redundancy in order to enhance the reliability of H-VPLS network. And this model was extended to inter-AS network with the network fault-protected design.5.Check the VPLS through building in the metro networkt, steps of network deployment was described in detail. And the problems in the networking process ware analyzed. This paper also tested the performance and the capability of protection switching in the VPLS network. The ability of reducing the data loss obviously in VPLS network with protection switching was authenticated, which could implement fast switching within 50ms.
