Internet bandwidth has been growing rapidly in recent years, and the existing network systems currently consume large amounts of power consumption. There are concerns about the further increase in power consumption given the expected growth in telecommunication networks. From the view point of not only preventing global warming but also reducing operational expenditure, power efficient telecommunication networks are becoming a serious issue. In particular, broadband access network systems have much higher power consumption than metro and core network systems because of the high number of communication devices involved. Therefore, reducing the energy consumption of access network systems plays an import role for the power saving of the telecommunication networks. PON is the most popular access technology and power conserved PON system has become a hot study issue.EPON is a new solution for optical fiber access network, and WiMAX is a new technology for broadband wireless access network with promising bright futures for application. The merge for wireless access and fiber access is in accordance with the trend of the broadband and mobilization of access network. The convergence of EPON and WiMAX is typical application for the merge. To ensure the merged network run steadily and efficiently, a strengthened management system is a must.The study of this paper is centered on energy efficient EPON system and the network management system for EPON and WiMAX convergence network. The main content is displayed as follows.1. The schemes of energy saving PON systems in recent years have been studied. After the analysis and compare of those schemes, a new energy saving scheme based on double-way dynamic bandwidth allocation and ONU sleep mode has been proposed.2. A simulation platform for the new energy saving scheme has been built. According to the simulation results, when in low network load, 20% energy of each ONU could be saved on average, and when in medium network load,10% could be saved on average. In addition, the new scheme could satisfy the requirements of packet loss rate and the delay.3. The overall design of network management system of the EPON and WiMAX convergence network has been studied and participated in. The demand analysis, the preliminary design, the detailed design, and the implementation and test of the WiMAX management module have been carried on.
