As the statistic of2009, the energy consumption of Information and CommunicationsTechnology (ICT) has made up8%of all energy consumption. As a very important part ofICT, the telecommunication network is consuming more and more energy. Despite the accessnetwork’s device spend less energy than backbone network, but the number of access networkis very large, so the total energy consumption is huge. So the report estimated that the energyconsumption is up to70%of all network. Meanwhile the development of the passive opticalnetwork is very quickly. So more and more scholars pay close attention to the energy savingtechnology.This paper put forward some new ways for EPON energy saving. It can help thecustomer saving energy in the basic of no affection on service quality. At firstly we introducethe EPON protocol very specific and put forward this paper’s argument. In the second placewe research the802.3ah protocol in detail, and discuss it’s advantage and disadvantage.Finally according to the disadvantage we propose three ways to saving energy.1、We discuss the frequently switchover between sleep mode and active mode in reality,and from this bring the extra energy consumption and delay. So we propose a energy savingschedule scheme based on Service Level Agreement. According to the result of simulation,we can find that compare with the802.3ah protocol’s energy efficiency mechanism the newmechanism can saving more30%of energy. This energy saving way can really balance theproblem of delay and energy saving.2、We analysis the IEEE802.3ah protocol very deeply. We found out the biggestdrawback is the sleep time is fixed. If the link rate is slowly, the ONU is still switch betweennormal and sleep, it will waste more energy. For saving this problem we propose a new sleeptime, this sleep time can adopt with the link rate. When the link rate is slowly, the sleep timecan change to short.3、In recent years the development tendency of ONU is hybrid link rate. According tothis characteristic we propose a self-adaption rated link rate mechanism. It can combine withsleep method for better energy saving method.
