With the rapid development of maritime traffic, the ships on the sea are getting more and more crowded. Moreover, in bad weather and sea condition, or in the area of port and busy traffic, ships will often suffer collision or even the serious maritime traffic accidents, such as sinking and capsizing. Reflection areas of target which are small, such as small canoe, buoy, etc, can not easily be detected by radar. And it is also hard to discover the ships which are hidden by the land. These factors will surely increase the uncertainty and risk of sailing, which prompt us to improve the precision of radar detection and the reliability performance. Meanwhile, radars that have the ability of automatic detection and tracking will be the trend in the development of modern radar.The principle of radar video image acquisition is introduced first in this thesis. Then some digital picture processing techniques on the acquired radar images are discussed, such as image mosaic, range recognition, removing useless marks which are not radar raw video signals, getting the position of eccentric ship by Hough Transform, image interpolation, converting color digital images into gray images and so on, to get a series of new images. The storage format of the data file of the processed radar image information and the redisplay method of the processed radar image are also presented. Finally, effective algorithms of ship target automatic detection and extraction of distance and direction are developed under WINDOWS system with VC++and MFC.The radar image data file processed with the software presented in this thesis can be used as the source of radar data processing algorithms, and it can fulfill the requirement of a large number of experiments of data processing algorithms. Mean-while, the method of target detection and extraction is feasible, which can efficiently realize target detection on the clutter background.
