As a contemporary advanced management idea and tool, the development of ERP system has played a very important role in accelerating the modernization process of Chinese enterprise management. More and more enterprises have realized that the only way to increase enterprise vitality and market competitiveness is to achieve informationization and modernization for enterprise management. Therefore, ERP system should be adopted more actively in many fields to boost the development of Chinese enterprises. In the "Eleventh Five-Year" development goals and planning, North China Power Grid Company made the development and construction of ERP system as an important part of the "SG186" project. By constructing ERP system, the company has managed to minimize recourses occupied by enterprise business management, reduce operating costs, as well as support improving the level of meticulous management.According to the practice of North China Power Grid Company, this paper comprises of three parts. Firstly, the business requirements of North China Power Grid Company is analyzed in detail, which is then compared to the original functions of Oracle software packages in the procurement, inventory and other modules. Based on the comparison and the analysis of differentiation, solutions are recommended. Secondly, the architecture design for the Oracle Database system is proposed on the base of the system hardware on-line information needs and the company's network environment. Finally, based on the analysis results, the design for system architecture and the software functionalities of procurement and inventory modules are accomplished to improve the level of Material Management as well as reduce operating costs.
