There are two main methods for color separation. One is the four-color separation, the other is the HiFi-color separation. Generally, they can satisfy people's requirements. However, for those wood-grain images, which have few hue and high saturation, the current methods have little practicability. This is because if traditional four-color separation was directly applied to wood-grain images, some color may not be reproduced, and if HiFi-color separation technology was used, both of the technics and cost would be unmanageable.A spot color separation model based on chroma theory and Neugebauer equation was proposed to resolve these problems. Firstly the traditional color separation technology was studied, and the characteristics of an image were analyzed. Then a spot color separation model was designed and implemented. This model is composed of three parts:image analysis, spot color identification and spot color separation. In the first part, an algorithm for the extraction and statistic of the image characteristics was advanced. In the second part, the demanded spot color was identified, which is based on the original color gamut and the predicted color gamut. In the third part, the spot color profile is produced with the identified spot color and Neugebauer model, by which the results of color separation for an image were presented.
