Antenna is a basic component of radio systems, which provides a means of transmitting and receiving radio waves. There are many kinds of antennas and their forms are various. Micro-strip antenna is only a member of the large antenna family. The advantages of micro-strip antenna are small size, light weight, low profile, conformal with the carrier and diverse electrical properties, which makes it applicable in a large area. However, narrow-band defect has limited its use. This paper mainly studies on how to enlarge the band of micro-strip antenna.Firstly, micro-strip antenna related theory was introduced, including radiation principle, feed mode and analysis method. Then the design methods of rectangular micro-strip patch antenna were presented. Importantly, the basic factors affecting bandwidth are analyzed. Simulations are on use of a high-frequency electromagnetic software Ansoft HFSS. Simulation results are consistent with theoretical analysis.Finally, a step-shaped substrate structure micro-strip antenna is designed using the design theory of rectangular micro-strip patch antenna. Simulation results show that resonance occurs at two frequency points and it can work on dual frequency. Compared with normal patch antenna, the bandwidth is broadened to some extent.
