With the rapid development of the sensor technology, semiconductor manufacturing technology, embedded microcontroller processing technology, etc,especially the rise of technology maturity of ZigBee wireless sensor networks, and the growing popularity of mobile phone users of GSM network and Smart home products truely enter all aspects of people's lives. With the wide application of intelligent appliances and equipment, it is imperative to know and control the operation status of home appliance equipment.This paper introduces the development of smart home system at home and abroad, the characteristics of compared various network technology, and effectively with the actual needs of users,and eventually with an opportunity of the development of ZigBee technology at the background of internet of things,and the ultimate means of infrared communication,and research the design philosophy and implementation of smart home system program based on SMS remote controlling household appliances.There are many functions of the hardware parts of this system, such as SMS transceiver, infrared transceiver, microprocessor module and nonvolatile memory,etc. Introduced the ZigBee protocol working principle, analyzed the ZStack mechanism, and designed a set of message command to controlling home appliances in software part. As the experiment showed, the system has the characteristics of good expansibility, low cost, low power consumption, low latency, low complexity and so on, which also has a wide range of application prospects in smart home.
