With the development of image sensor technology, Computer Technology, Image Processing Technology and the Network Technology, Video-based Communication system, Test system and Measurement system will be more in-depth. In almost all video applications, video capture and video compression are necessary. In addition, in order to meet the different needs, method of video capture is growing, and there are more and more video compression standards and codecs appear. In that way, it is necessary to research the video capture and video compression principles and methods.In this article, it studied principles and methods of video capture, video compression and video data storage. The main contents include:1. In order to get video capture from different video devices, it used three methods to implement the video capture, which were based on VFW,Direct Show and Third-party API.2. In the video capture, it discussed in detail the method of video character overlay, implemented the function of superimposing custom text on the on the video screen.3. For video compression technology, it Introduced the commonly used video compression standard, video compression codec, discusses in detail the use of COM interfaces for video compression CODEC call system programming method.4. Use the video codecs xVid,, compressing the captured video into MPEG4 mode.5. Briefly introduced the structure of AVI file, and discussed in detail the methods and processes of saving the video data and text information to the AVI file6. Studied the methods of synchronization of video and text in AVI file.7. Studied the method of how to read AVI file, that read the video frame and data frame, then unzip video frame obtained bitmap image data.For the researchs above, it built a test platform using the USB camera and DAHENG industrial cameras PD2000EX, and used C++Builder6.0 write the simulation software completing testing. Ultimately proved this approach is reasonable and feasible.
