With the development and wide application of the Internet, it becomes larger and larger in scale, more and more complex in software and hardware. It is very important for network management, network optimization and fault location to get a complete and accurate network topology.Network topology discovery is a process to determine the network devices and the status of their connections, to build a graphical representation on the basis of getting the connection between network devices. Topology discovery can be applied to help network managers to understand the topology clearly.Firstly, in this dissertation, we make an introduction of the classification and evaluation criterion of the network topology discovery. Secondly, we compare and summarize the major existing methods and algorithms of router-level topology discovery systematically, and propose an improved algorithm based on ICMP, UDP based on distributed probe and alias resolution. Thirdly, by using C language we implement the softwoare of the proposed algorithm, in which consists of four modules: data acquistion module, data processing module, data storage module and data display module. Fourthly, on the basis of the analysis of autonomous system level topology discovery methods, we proprose an improved algorithm based on the combination of Whois inquiry and active probe. Finally, the whole paper is summarized and some problems that worth considering are discussed.
