External illuminators based radar system uses the echo wave that is radiated by the outer radiators such as the civil broadcast or TV to track and detect the aerial object. Especially, the multistate radar using commercial television and radio broadcast signals to illuminate can be immunity to anti-radiation missiles and provides the capability of counter-stealth. So this kind of radar obviously has the cheerful prospect in the future electronic war. This paper selects Analogue TV video signal as outer radiant point. Firstly the paper introduces basic knowledge of phylogeny of external illuminators based radar and work elements of the system. Then the time and frequency characteristic of TV video signal is analyzed, the scheme and key techniques of signal processing for TV video signal based passive radar are referred. The adaptive clutter cancellation technique is discussed and a cancellation algorithm which is adapted to this system was introduced. In order to solve the range ambiguity in TV video signal based passive radar after match filter, several methods have been introduced in this paper. What's more important, a novel Mismatched Filter algorithm is developed for solving the problem of range ambiguity. Then the performance of the proposed algorithm is detailedly studied. Finally its effectiveness is demonstrated with the application to real data acquired with an experimental system. The processing results proved that the novel algorithm has the advantage of lower computational load, perfect performance and can solve the problem of range ambiguity.
