Electronic paper(E-paper) is a new display technology after LCD,LED and OLED. As the perfect combination of ordinary paper and electronic display technology, it has plenty of virtues, such as low power consumption, high contrast ratio, high resolution, lightweight, thin, portable, flexible and comfortable for eyes. It represents the future of display technology. Of so many choices, the electrophoretic display(EPD) is considered to be the best candidate for E-paper.Using the microencapsulated electronic ink materials developed by department of polymer science and engineering, Zhejiang University, we fabricated EPD devices with micro controller unit(MCU) embedded technology. Since microencapsulated electronic ink has its unique electrical characteristics, standard display driving techniques are not applicable. Therefore we first designed a simple microencapsulated electronic ink timing display applying both passive dynamic and static driving techniques. With the experiences gained, we finally chose static driving and customized the driving waveforms for matrix display. Then with additional consideration of power consumption and communication, we designed a microencapsulated electronic ink matrix display, which is composed of display controller and matrix display. According to the experiment result, the overall display performance is good.
