Electronic paper is a new fully reflective flat panel display, with advantages like thinness, flimsy, low energy consumption, broad viewing angle, re-writability, and erasability. Microencapsulated electrophoretic display which was one of display styles of electronic paper has been the subject of intense research,it can display graghics by driving electrophoretic particles move in the electrophoresis solution in electric field.This paper introduced the fundamental theories of electronic paper and current status of relevant study. The electronic paper using electrophoresis microcapsule displaying method was studied. With the theoretical analysis and experimental exploration to electronic ink, the paper further analyzed the factors influencing the effect of electronic ink displaying. The microcosmic morphology of electronic ink was observed by optics microscope and electrophoretic display instrument was made and then the display performance was tested,then the factors influencing drive voltage and response time was discussed.The design of display system of electronic ink was completed.In the hardware design of system,considered the ability of data processing and the reliability performance, the ATMEL Corporation's MCU AT89S51 has been chosen as master controller. High voltage,high-current Darlington arrays ULN2821 was used to enhance the driving voltage of electronic ink.Assemble language of MCS-51 was used in the software design of the display system. The whole programe was divided into different modules in the design. The display system can display mumber or letter responding the input of keyboard.
