Dialect Television & Regional Culture & Strait Communication

The Minnan Dialect Channel of Quanzhou Television was created under the special economic, political and cultural background, and at the time during which the dialect program was prosperous and the relationship between the both sides of Taiwan Strait was at a changeable situation. This essay tries to systematically analyze its program operation with the method of communication content analysis and anthropology field study. At the same time, the author went to visit the towns and counties in Quanzhou Area and the worksites of Quanzhou Television Station, while interviewing some local citizens,workers from other cities or other provinces and the staff of the Minnan Dialect Channel as well. In addition, the author made a well targeted questionnaire survey in a middle school in Quanzhou.Through the content analysis, this essay discusses the regional culture value of the Minnan Dialect Channel. The channel raises the level of respectability for Minnan dialect. And Minnan dialect has been awarded to be legal in mass media. The mass media raises the social status of Minnan culture. The Minnan Dialect Channel has play a positive role in the cultural continuity and cultivating dialect popular cultureWith the content analysis, the interview and the questionnaire survey, this essay finds out that the Minnan Dialect Channel has done a good try at the strait communication and regional culture continuity. The practice of the dialect channel tells us that the current strait communication should persist in culture identity, adopting the soft power of culture to settle the divergence among the people from the both sides. We should advance and enrich the fine cultural heritage to strengthen the culture identity of Taiwan people, and promote the communication, cooperation, and innovation of the culture from both sides of Taiwan Strait, and all of the work is helpful for the future nation reunification.After the systematical analysis of the culture operation of Minnan dialect channel, the essay also finds out that there are some embarrassments in the culture operation. The dialect television and the strait medias are also under the pressure of survival and development. The dialect television can perform its strait communication and culture continuity function well, and both two functions can promote each other. However, under the heavy pressure of survival and development, the decision makers of the dialect channel often pursue the economic interest first, instead of stressing the importance of the above two functions.The essay finally discusses the problems of survival and development of Minnan dialect channel after theoretical analysis, and offers three proposals to solve the problem. Firstly, as a strait media, Minnan dialect channel should deepen the understanding of Taiwanese, and clear up their traditional stereotyped image of "culture unification policy" from the Mainland so as to optimize the effects of strait communication. Secondly, as a dialect media, Minnan dialect channel should enhance cooperation among the medias in the same dialect area to increase the economic and cultural efficiency of dialect medias. Thirdly, as a modern media, Minnan dialect channel should adopt the advanced techniques, and propel media convergence to improve the influence and communication efficiency of dialect television and strait media.
