Data collection and monitoring system is an important part in the modern industry and public field, the traditional remote monitoring system is not sufficient for various requirements with the development of communication technology. The GPRS network used in intelligent monitoring system which can transmit a large number of data with low communication cost is, however, high in the cost of the model; wireless sensor network can monitor a great quality of nodes in a specific area with low cost and low power consumption. Therefore, remote monitoring system can be fulfilled with relatively low cost if these two methods are combined, GPRS transceivers are installed only in the base stations, data are collected by the nodes in the wireless sensor network, gathered in the base station and then transmitted to the monitoring center by GPRS. The"one-to-many"data transmission mode is usually needed in wireless sensor network, in which unicast and broadcast would result in abundance of information or network congestion, while multicast can not only alleviate the burden on the source node, but also reduce the usage of the bandwidth. For this reason, the reliable multicast routing of the data packet in the wireless sensor network plays the vital role, which influence the send-receive efficiency and network delay. This paper focus on the application of multicast routing based on wireless sensor network in remote monitoring system. In this paper, the wireless sensor network is introduced first, the intelligent monitoring system with combined wireless sensor network and GPRS is proposed on that basis. Then, after compared the multicast routing algorithm in the wireless sensor network, multicast routing algorithm based on tree is selected and simulated. At last, multicast protocol specification is established, and monitoring interface is designed, which is very helpful for the monitoring of network status and topology structure. The analysis shows that multicast based on tree can complete data transmission with high efficiency in the monitoring systems described in this paper. The effectiveness of the MARS and MPH are proved by the emulation in the MATLAB, which also certify that the superiority of MARS to MPH is more evident as the number of the nodes increase, especially the destination nodes.
