In many wireless network technologies, as a low-power, low-data rate, low-cost technology,ZigBee is widely used in industrial and home automation. Research on network protocol for specific applications is of great significance and value.Network simulation for ZigBee network provides a convenient, efficient method of verification and analysis, currently, NS-2 network simulation software is one of the most popular tools in this field.NS-2 contains IEEE802.15.4 protocol module, but lacks the support of ZigBee network layer protocol , ZigBee network layer routing protocol is the core part of the ZigBee technology.This paper analyzes ZigBee network routing technology detailedly, and gives a realization of the ZigBee routing algorithm based on the existing routing protocol source code on NS-2 platform, then conducts a verification and simulation of the routing protocol, and do some experiments to analyze the behavior of the ZigBee network under environment parameters such as traffic model, node density and connection machine.In view of the lack of node energy considerations in ZigBee specification, this paper proposes an improved energy-balance routing algorithm based on tree structure, simulation results show that routing algorithm taking into account the energy factor can effectively balance the node energy consumption and reduce node death.According to ZigBee technology and intelligent home system characteristics, based on two typical topology, this paper conducts several sets of experiments to study the perfor- mance characteristics of ZigBee network, including: different network size, different number of connection machine, different effective communication distance and different parameter values. The results for a star network show that: when the number of the node is more than 63 nodes, network performance will significantly deteriorate, and the number of the node com- municates with the coordinator within the same time is best not more than 23.The results for mesh network show that: 1. When the effective coverage of the signal is about twice the aver- age distance between nodes , the network will get the best performance; 2. When node density is high, the network packet delivery rate will be increased, but under different node density the maximum number of machine connection is best not more than 6;3. If the value para- meter ACTIVE_ROUTE_TIMEOUT which represents the lifetime of an active route is larger than the value of the average time interval of sending packets, the network will get a better performance. Simulation provides a theoretical basis and guidance for ZigBee application in intelligent home systems.
