With the increasing demand of massive computing power and storage capacity, a number of new computing technology and business application models are proposed. As popular computing model, Cloud computing and Grid computing is most concerned at present. The two computing models, which are inextricably linked and have some differences, have been discussing on the relationship of them in the industry. By studying the principles, mechanisms and techniques of cloud computing and grid computing, and analyzing the characteristics and adapt to their respective areas of them, effective solutions have been proposed to overcome their defects. From the system architecture, resource management, programming, security, and business applications, this paper gets the in-depth comparison between Cloud computing model and Grid computing on working principle, implementation mechanism, technical features and technical advantages. In the comparison process, the analysis of the characteristics of the two computing model, the applicability and inapplicability of solving different problems between them, and the mutual learning of each other. By the comparative study between two computing model, it is learned that the architecture of Cloud computing and Grid computing is generally similar, but there are great functional differences only in the resource layer. Heterogeneity is solved using middleware technology by Grid computing, while using virtualization technology by Cloud computing; The most techniques used by two computing model are similar, but large differences exist in data management and resource integration: (1) To data management, Grid computing achieves data management and positioning with a shared file system, while Cloud computing uses data-centered MapReduce specification to realize it. (2) To resource integration, Grid computing implements it with the middleware technology, but Cloud computing with the virtualization technology; The programming and application model of both them to the same problems has interoperability or mutual-learning; To security mechanisms, the internal security problems that two of them face is similar, but the Cloud faces the security risks of virtualization. The solutions are proposed to avoid those security risks and external security of the cloud; The business model of two computing model can provide most of the same type of service, however, the biggest difference is that the Grid can not provide the platform for services as the Cloud computing.
