A Probe Into Russian Religious Culture And Art In The Creation Of Master And Margaret

Mikhail Bulgakov is one of the most famous Russian writers and playwrights of the 20th century. He spent over half of the his lifetime in creating the novel The Master and Margarita, which represents his highest achievements.This novel was not published until 1966s,20 years after the writer passed away. This work caused serious concerns in Russia and abroad soon after it was published. It was also widely recognized as the retrospect and summary of the writer’s life. The enduring charm of this novel not only attributes to the philosophical thought and the pursue of human nature, but also the novel means of artistic expression.From the narrative structure to the characterization and artistic style, this novel reflects the writer’s thinking of social reality, the rethink of morality and the pursue of ultimate truth.Meanwhile, Russia is deeply influenced by the Eastern Orthodox, religious thoughts infiltrated every writer’s literary creation. As a religious novel, The Master and Margarita has inextricable relations to the Christian in the aspect of character set, spatial arrangement, the choice of genre, writing technique and the theme. Bulgakov not only makes a mythical interpretation to the biblical stories,but also has a literary parody of the true Christian world. The complicated characters and spacial structure embodies the profound religious philosophical spirit, this spirit is not only reflected in the content of the novel, more reflected in its artistic structure.This article tries to reveal the religious culture of this novel from the angle of art structure, which could give a new cultural interpretation.Many scholars have done researches on The Master and Margarita, and the achievements are fruitful.All these studies are concentrated on the careful researches of novel and finding out the meanings. But most of the achievements focus on the unilateral study, such as religious implication, artistic skills, content, theme,characters.And the research achievements which combine the artistic structure and religious philosophy are very rare.This paper attempts to explore the Russian religious philosophy of this novel from the several aspects, such as the deconstruction of myth, the characterizing of figures, the set of genre etc.
