Teaching activities of Chinese characters keep as key point in the language teaching period. Character teaching is completely different from alphabet teaching, especially in early stages, which makes oversea students who are used to alphabetic writing, feel difficult in learning, writing and remembering Chinese characters. If obstacles not removed at the primary stage, students may feel afraid of learning or even give up. Therefore, according to difficulties and problems occured in the teaching process during my internship in the department of oversea education in Yangzhou University, I would like to summarize and analyze the reasons of difficulties in teaching of Chinese characters and make personal proposals and design appropriate instructional plan.The main contents are as follow:The part of introduction includes selected topic reason, research of oversea teaching, the value and significance of research and corpus sources.The first chapter describes causes of problems existed in the elementary Chinese teaching class. The difficulties of learning are demonstrated by difficulties in distinguishing similar strokes, structures and homophones. The difficulties of teaching are demonstrated by convergence of textbooks, teaching difficulties and problems existed. Various causes are analyzed from four aspects:learning characteristics of oversea students, manual editing, teaching methods and curriculum.The second chapter focuses on comparison and analysis of some common methods of the Chinese teaching, such as the character-based and word-based methods, centralized and decentralized literacy and classification literacy. According to these teaching methods combined with teaching experience, teaching skills in elementary Chinese class are explored and suggestions are proposed accordingly.The third chapter, based on the teaching skills and suggestions analyzed in the premier two chapters, focuses on the design of appropriate instructional plan for elementary class from five aspects:teaching objectives, teaching content, teaching object, classroom teaching and class practices.In summary, this article summarizes the characteristics and problems existed in current elementary Chinese teaching class and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of common teaching methods. Teaching skills and suggestions are presented according to specific teaching experience in order to design specific teaching plan for elementary Chinese teaching.
