In the year of2011, the tablet of the Narration of the Zunjing Pavilion, which is made bythe celebrated litterateur, calligrapher Yang Huan in Yuan Dynasty, had found in the former siteof the Zunjing pavilion in Jining, Shandong. The tablet is set up in the summer of1299. Thehead of the tablet engraved four seal word——Zun Jing Ge Ji. The tablet inscription describesthe cause and the process of building the Zunjing pavilion in Confucius’ temple in Jining. Thetablet is huge, the characters engraved in it are various and the style of calligraphy is mixed, thusthe tablet has gain extensive attentions since it has been discovered. Yang Huan, the creator ofthe tablet, has the character of erudite and are good at calligraphy; he is proficiency in the use ofancient writing and prestigious in the field of both philology and calligraphy in Yuan Dynasty.The Narration of Zunjing Pavilion is Yang’s last production. The discovery of the tablet has agreat historical and cultural value in the research of the calligraphic style in Yuan Dynasty, theevolution of ancient writing, the Confucian education condition and the local customs in Jining.What’s more, it provides significant document literature in the study of the using and the valueof the inscription of Confucian classics in Yuan Dynasty.The topic of this thesis analyzes the character using and the calligraphic values of theNarration of the Zunjing Pavilion form its historical background, shape and structure and content.The most obvious characteristic of the pavilion is the use of Chinese characters. It contains theChinese characters which are not of standardized forms, the variant Chinese characters and thepopular form of characters. Making a contrast of these characters using in the past dynasties canhelp us to research the method of the character using in Yuan Dynasty and the influence of thecalligraphy value.The thesis is researched form four aspect:Firstly, the tablet of the Narration of the Zunjing Pavilion contains the Chinese characterswhich are not of standardized forms, the variant Chinese characters and the popular form ofcharacters, contrasting these characters using in Yuan Dynasty and the past and later dynasties,can help to summarize the rule of the using of these characters.Secondly, making a comparison of the tablet of the Narration of the Zunjing Pavilion andthe tablet of the Epitaph of Chu Shi Mr. Wang built in the year of1299and the tablet of theNarration of the Duanben Pavilion built in the yaer of1350and is discovered in1956in Jiuxianvillage on the east of Qufu city can help to find the inheriting of the inscription in the samedynasty and the same area. Thirdly, the great tablet phenomenon brings the aesthetical trend of “great” into people’slife, which reflects the mind that of the preference of “great” of our Chinese people. Thispromotes the appearance of the super great tablet in Tsing Dynasty, and plays a enlightening rolein the aesthetic development of the tablet at the same time.Finally, summarizing the breakthrough of the style in former dynasty in the aspect of thecharacter using and the structure of the tablet of the Narration of the Zunjing Pavilion and theinfluence for the unruly style in later dynasty.
