The thesis sets variant forms of Chinese characters in the 2005 edition of the"Modern Chinese Dictionary" (MCD) as research object. By the defining theconnotation of variant forms of Chinese characters and confirming the scope,principia and methods to the study, a classification for total variant forms in the 2005edition of the MCD is firstly made. Then the analysis of similarities and differencesbetween MCD and "the List of the First Series of Standardized Variant Forms" iscarried through a horizontal comparison between the two fore narrated. At the sametime an aforementioned comparison between the 2005 edition and the 2002 editionand a further systematic description of the 2005 edition MCD is done. Thoseamendments' validity and feasibility are discussed on the basis of these analyses.Finally, the conclusion of the principia, stylistic rules and systematizations about thevariant forms of MCD is made out. This thesis includes 6 parts.Partâ… is introduction, this part is consist of a brief description of the status ofresearch about variant forms of a Chinese character that revealing the purpose andsignificance of this research and a definition of variant forms of Chinese charactersthat confirming the scope, principia and methods to the study. In this paper, Mr.Zhang Shuyan's definition to the word is adopted. The paper adopts the principles ofcombining synchronic and diachronic research and the methods of combiningqualitative and quantitative research to deal with the variant forms of Chinesecharacters in the 2005 edition MCD.Part II is focused on the number between the standardized body and the variantforms, the theory of Chinese character Construction and the relationship betweenvoice and meaning of the standardized body and the variant forms. To reveal theprofile of variant forms of a Chinese character in Modern Chinese Dictionary in thepaper, firstly an Exhausted Statistics is made on the three aforementioned aspects,then sorts and depicts.After a comparison between the MCD and The List of the First Series ofStandardized Variant Form, Part â…¢ is divided to four fragments: Words reproduced byboth dictionary and the list, words reproduced by the list, words reproduced by thedictionary, the variant forms of the list that become the standardized prefixes in thedictionary. After listing exhaustively for every case, further analysis for the typical ismade. And by exploring the differences and similarities between the dictionary andthe table, the reasons for the changes made by the dictionary that focused on themodern Chinese language are indicated in this part.Part â…£ makes a comparison between the MCD of the 2005 edition and the 2002edition. By means of inspecting the changes and amendments made by the 2005edition, nine cases were choosen, such as order's adjustment of the TraditionalChinese character and the variant forms, the specific shape's change;a group ofwords' addition or deletion and so on. The part makes an Exhausted Statistics thensorts, depicts and discusses whether these amendments are standardized and realistic.Part V summarizes the principles of settling with variant forms of a Chinesecharacter in Modern Chinese Dictionary in aspects of common customs, convenienceto write, and decreasing confusions of pronunciation and meanings on the basis of theabove four parts, Then the stylistic rules and systematic ness about the variant formsof MCD is explored in this part.Part VI is the conclusion that summarized the content of this study. |
