With continuous improvement of the Internet Infrastructure, people demand more and more multimedia information, such as high definition, high-quality video and audio. As a result, the research of Video-On-Demand (VOD) software becomes more and more important. At present, many well-known companies, such as Microsoft, Real and Apple are launching this kind of products and correlated products. However, most of them are enterprise products, mainly aiming at enterprises and campuses etc., providing services in intranets. The areas that these products cover with, the consumers, and the quantities of programs are relatively limit. According to the analysis of the feature of the streaming media and the grid technology, on the basis of existing data gridding technology GridDaen that has been developed by one group in NUDT, the author have done some primary research on VOD systems on the WWW. The purpose of GridDaen's VOD system is to realize a self-adaptive, extendable, widely-adaptable, trans-platformed VOD system, to provide users with transparent, high definition, high-quality, convenient audio and video services by centralized management, scheduling and co-operation service of independent multi-VOD systems on WWW, and to support unprecedented scale and extending ability.Firstly, the thesis introduces basic conception and technology of streaming media, analyses the recent development of VOD software, and gives brief introduction of grid technology and the OGSA (Open Grid Services Architecture), and the GridDaen data gridding system including its architecture and main function. Secondly, it describes the architecture of GVOD system and software architecture in detail, and discuses the server structure based on OGSA. Thirdly, the thesis discuses the store and management problem of program resource in GVOD system and the problem of user classification. Finally, the thesis gives particular description of GVOD client media-playing software based on JFM.
