Defect tracking and control is one of most important way to improve efficiency of software development team. However, there are some problems existing in traditional defect tracking approach, which include limited scope (only in coding phase) and inefficient collaboration process. Based on the research work of the national high-tech development project (863 project) "Research on Quality Assurance in Software Industry Development", our study focuses on defect tracking technology in distributed team and collaboration technology in software development. In this thesis, we present a collaboration-based defect tracking solution, which expands the scope of traditional tracking management. The solution supports whole lifecycle of software development, and enables us to implement central defect tracking and control in whole development process. The related people of this solution include not only programmers, but also analysts, system architects, project management, customers and end-users. Firstly, we introduce the background and the significance of this subject, and present the related work and limitation of traditional defect tracking technology. Then, a collaboration-based defect tracking solution is given with the discussion of main state diagram model and data structure design. This thesis also represents architecture of supporting CASE tools, prototype implementation and typical usage scenarios. At last, we make a conclusion, summarize the main research activities and the limitation of the research, and discuss the future work. The results of the research can be applied into two fields including software process improvement and management in medium and small software organizations, and improvement of the capacity of development management in software organizations which provide outsourcing services, especially offshore outsourcing.
