Since the appearance of Zuozhuan in the last years of the Spring and Autumn Period, it has become an important Confucian classic and exerted a far-reaching impact on later age. The book Yilin was written by a scholar on Yi ology named Jiao Yanshou, which was characterized by four-character verse with end rhymes as well as a large number of citations from the pre-Qin books and records. As a result, although it was originally a work about fortune-telling, it still had high literary values. This thesis is intended to probe into some issues concerning the allusions and words in the citations from Zuozhuan in Yilin.The introduction is devoted to the introduction of Jiao Yanshou and its works, the overview of the academic study at all times regarding them as well as the presentation of the dimensions, significance of selecting the topic and the research methods in this thesis. Chapter One dwells on the possibility of the citations of allusions and words in Yilin from Zuozhuan by probing into the origin of Zuozhuan and its dissemination in pre-Qin and East and West Han Dynasties, then attention is directed to the elucidation of many coincidences in terms of ideological tendency and thinking ways of Yi ology between Zuozhuan and Yilin. Chapter Two elaborates on the citations of allusions and words in Yilin from Zuozhuan. It begins with the interpretation of the editions used in this thesis regarding the cited Linci or patterns of sentences as well as the principle of classification of allusions. Then, four sections are devoted to expounding four categories: allusions about character, allusions about alliance and warfare, allusions about disaster, allusions about words as well as some doubtful allusions. After investigating the source of the allusions, the purposes of author in citing these allusions are also interpreted. Chapter Three deals with the characteristics and causes of quoting allusions from Zuozhuan in Yilin. In the conclusion section, the authors points out the demerits in the thesis as well as some thought-provoking ideas derived from it.
