Middleware technology has been the research frontier in enterprise computing field. Middleware is connectivity software that consists of a set of enabling services that allow multiple processes running on one or more machines to interact across a network. Middlewware can not only help enterprise users to accelerate the enterprise information system development process and shorten the lifecycle of enterprise information system but it can significantly simplify the system complexity reducing the repeated work and maintenance workloads. Besides, middleware can shield the system heterogeneity well and integrate the legacy system which exits in almost every enterprise, which saves the enterprise IT investment and effectively protect the enterprises'original IT assets. This paper first discusses the enterprise informationization concepts and analyses the characteristics of enterprise information system. It focuses on the ubiquitous problems of enterprise information system. After that the paper states the theory and methodology based-on middleware technique. It discusses the popular distributed object server-side middleware standard including DCOM, CORBA, and J2EE. Having studied the basic middleware fundamentals, the paper applies the theory to a practical design and development enterprise information system called Construction Project Management Information System (CPMIS). The author elaborates the process of design and development of the CPMIS using J2EE standard based on middleware technology and discusses the key technical problems in CPMIS implementation including the interoperability of heterogeneous database formed by MS SQL Server and IBM Lotus Notes and legacy system integration. It applies the data access middleware called DAO (Data Access Objects) to enhance the relational database access efficiency. Finally, the paper shows the detailed implementation of the CPMIS. This paper mainly focuses on the application of middleware technique to the web-based enterprise information system development. It has proposed an approach on solving the heterogeneous database interoperability and legacy system data integration that occurred in ubiquitous enterprise information system by using middleware based technology. The contribution and difficulty in this paper is in that how to solve the data access and information share between the relational database MS SQL Server and non-relational database Lotus Notes. To solve this problem, the author proposed a method based on middleware techniques by using Domino JSP Custom Tag Libraries which is proved to be effective and efficient in real practice. In today's rapid development of information technology, the research work of this paper has practical meaning for the development of enterprise information system with the same type which has high availability, scalability, maintainability and security etc. The CPMIS has been put into use in the real construction project and has gained good social and economic results utility.
