The network management is becoming more and more important as theapplication of the network become more complicated. The field of networkmanagement is very wide, including malfunction management, fee management, configuration management, performance management and security management. Andamong of them ,the performance management is very important and also is the mostneglected part of the network management. The performance management is referring to the function that is needed byevaluating the action and efficiency of communication of the managed object. And giving the long-term evaluation and tendency of the network by collectingand analyzing the statistics data while control the performance at theaccepted level. The application of the network is becoming more and more complicated, suchas VOD, Video game, IP phone etc. instead of WWW, FTP, TELNET etc. the newapplication of the network would beget great influence about the comprising ofnetwork traffic and the feature of network behavior.Through the analysis of performance and network traffic, we can find thebottleneck of the network and the factor that could affect the performance.Through the properly configuration and necessary update, we can improve theperformance of the network greatly without updating the network widely, soavoiding the waste of the unnecessary updating. The first part of this article give the background and newest internationalresearch at the same time introduce the tendency. The second part introduce thebasic method of network measurement, including methodology of measurement, methodology of modeling and methodology of general analysis. The third part givethe system of measurement, including index and criterion of measurement. Theforth part is the most important part of the article, and through analyzing theactual data, giving the protocol distribution, packet size distribution, time...
