Since China's economic reform in 1978, Chinese society and the media have undergone significant changes in the new global and commercial contexts and are in far better shape than the persistent images of a propaganda state suggest. This dissertation explores the impacts of globalization and commercialization on the Chinese media since the 1980s in order to evaluate the development of the mass media's public sphere in China.Chapter 1 reviews the theory of Habermas's public sphere in order to illustrate the media's crucial role in the public sphere and democracy. Chapters 2 examine the dynamics of the development of the Post-Mao's mass media's public sphere in China. Chapter 3 explores the practices and achievements of the Chinese media in constructing a public sphere since 1978. Chapter 4 demonstrates that a visible, though limited public sphere of the mass media has begun to emerge in Chinese society and contributed to the democracy in China. As a whole, the characteristic of the mass media's public sphere in China is a kind of gradual forming and progress. Although it has been challenged by some political and economic factors, the further development of the mass media's public sphere in China will go on expanding and maturating in the future.
