Tunable multi-wavelength short optical pulse sources around 1550nm are important for applications such as wavelength division multiplexed (WDM), optical time division multiplexed (OTDM), and hybrid WDM/OTDM optical communication systems. In this paper, the theory analysis and experimental study on the generation of the low jitter optical pulses with gain-switched laser diodes is presented, those pulses also have the advantages ofwavelength-tunable or dual/multi-wavelength. The main works are summarized as follows:(1) The injection locking phenomenon has been analyzed in theory; the numerical simulation of optical pulses timing jitter reduction by external seeding injection has been done based on the rate equations with an added Langevin noise.(2) A method for combining injection locking technique with reduction timing jitter means is developed. Using this method, low jitter tunable single wavelength optical pulses has been generated. The dependency of timing jitter and SMSR on injected power and wavelength detuning is studied.(3) A scheme that using two DFB laser diodes as external seeding sources to inject into the gain-switched FP laser diode is proposed and demonstrated. For the first time, low jitter tunable dual-wavelength gain-switched optical pulses are generated in experiment.(4) A method that using a FP laser diode as external seeding toinject into a gain-switched FP laser diode is developed to reduce the pulses timing jitter. Low jitter and multi-wavelength gain-switched optical pulses are generated in experiment. (5) Compared the timing jitter reduction under different injection conditions, a conclusion that under the same injected power, the more amounts the injected wavelengths are, the lower the optical pulses timing jitter is has been proposed.
