With the development of science and technology, the improvement of social productivity, technology of the TV and computer technology have already become the main means of the modern information transmission and information transaction. The video image-overlapping is one of the multimedia technology applications, and it is the result that the technology of the TV combined with the technology of the computer. Video character-overlapping can provide and increase the information that the original television is unable to provide in time and make the picture with excellent pictures and texts,striking and beautiful,which is a branch of video image-overlapping technology, and can overlap character information on the original television.The article has introduced the design method and the realized scheme of software and hardware of video image processing system based on CPLD/FPGA technology. In the design, The main function of CPLD/FPGA is to finish the video image sampling, character-overlapping and displaying on VGA . The structure of the controller is divided into the following five parts: image collecting and processing module, serial interface receiving module, character-overlapping module, SRAM read and writed module, VGA displayed and controlled.CPLD XC95288xl chip of Xilinx Company has been adapted in the design of the main controller and Verilog HDL was utilized for hardware description,but Verilog source program written is not only suitable for CPLD device but also suitable for FPGA device.
