With the emergence of information appliances and the home network, intelligent home environments will come into being: people can use computers in their offices to control the appliances in home; the manufactures can diagnose and repair the appliances online; the safe system can send the warning message automatically etc. So both the appliances' informationization and the home's networking will be the trend of the development of our home. Digital home network will provide a comfortable and convenient environment for users.This paper provides a language named Information Appliance Interface Definition Language(IAIDL), which is based on the characters of information appliances. This language is implement-independent, which tries to define all aspects of an information appliance, including attributes (performance parameters), operations (interfaces that can be provided to outers) and the relationships between the information appliances. The IAIDL's description about the information appliances is the basis of implement of the remote-supervise system.Because of IAIDL is a language that is independent of implement, it needs to be translated into an user interface which can be capable of being operated. In this paper, two translators are designed. One is called interface-translator, which interprets IAIDL into middle information according to different requirements. The middle information is contained in the interface tables which can be stored in the database in gateway. The other is called operational interface-translator, which converts the information in database into a visually operational interface where users can control the appliances in the home network. In fact, users in clients control the information appliances by processing information in database.In order to demonstrate whether IAIDL can completely define the information appliances and the IAIDL translators can translate information correctly, an information appliance remote-supervise system is designed by analyzing information appliances, gateway and client in the paper. In this system, every section uses remote-control protocols to transfer messages and process all of the information, and eventually complete the remote-supervise in client.At last, by using Delphi 6.0 and SQL Server 2000, the software simulation implement of the remote-supervise system in C/S and B/S modes are given in the paper.
