Ding Ling was a celebrated writer in the history of Chinese modern literature as well as an outstanding editor in the Chinese editing history. She was a prolific writer and also made great achievement as an editor. She had been linked with periodicals for more than 50 years, which enabled her to gain abundant experience and thus helped her to draw her unique style of editing and her own idea about this. This thesis emphasizes on the research into Ding Ling as an editor rather than as a writer. Through the investigation into Ding Ling's lifelong editing activity in the literary press field, the author focuses on her ideology of editing literary periodicals. By the shifting of study viewpoint, the author summarizes Ding Ling's outstanding achievements in literary periodicals editing, and even puts this summary into present literary periodical editing, which exists in a desolate condition. This thesis consists of five parts: Part one: Introduction. Due to historical factors, there are very few works concerning Ding Ling's ideology of editing work. It is only in recent years that people gradually pay more attention to it. Last year was the 100th anniversary of Ding Ling. A number of periodicals published articles in praise of Ding Ling's accomplishment as an editor and recalled Ding Ling's editing activities. The facet of Ding Ling as an editor once again drew public attention. Part two: Ding Ling and the several literary journals she edited. Ding Ling was always an active editor working for the CPC's history. Form 1930s to 1980s, she had been the editor of several important journals successively, including The Big Dipper which was the organ of The Federation Union of the Left-lining Writers, the literary supplement of The Liberation Daily which was the organ of Central Committee of CPC, The Literary Journal which was the organ of Union of Cultural Circles, China which was a bimonthly Journal of Union of Chinese Writers. She could grasp the main problems in the life of the masses in different historic period of the CPC's literary enterprise and she prosecuted the direction socialist literature. She had contributed tremendously to the prosperity of socialist literary creation and to the development of Chinese literary enterprise. Part three: Ding Ling's idea on editing the literary periodicals. This part discusses the following three aspects. (I) Being bold and courageous to get involved into the contemporary life. Ding Ling kept close pace with the times and stuck to the correct standpoint, therefore, the literary periodicals edited by Ding Ling were good reflections of the trend of that day. She was fully aware of the social influence of the literary works and so courageously edited and published many literary works that reflected and revealed the various problems in reality. What's more, she was not constrained to her circumstance and boldly told the truth of that time. (â…¡) Being an editor of and for the ordinary people. Ding Ling strongly approved of the masses' viewpoint. In 1949,she had put forward the idea that the writer should work on behalf of the masses. Throughout her editing activities she had carried out her idea of being an editor of and for the ordinary people. She stuck to her idea that art serves the proletariats peasants, workers and soldiers and stressed that the literary periodicals should be enjoyed by the ordinary people. Thus the editor and writers should try to reflect the masses' feelings, thoughts and wills in simple plain words. The literary periodicals should be friends of the masses. She regarded the masses as the final verification of the literary periodicals and so the editor should keep close connection with the masses and improve the editing work in accordance with the masses' opinions.
