"Common Story of the Eastern Horizen" was played on May first, 1993 for the first time. After a short period of exploration and adjustment, it made "to narrate the stories of common people" as its banner and documentary as its style for producing and programming. "Common story" is an inevitable outcome of the long term development of documentaries in China , and a significant sign which revealed a further opening in tele media sphere and even in Chinese society. Main media of documentary broadcasting experienced a shift from film to television after the establishment of the People's Republic of China. In the first few years of 1990s, reforms of China's tele media were further developed as the waves of mass culture sweeped throughout the whole nation. After the birth of this program, its focus was transformed from common people's daily life to their psychology and spiritual condition in social changing and reforming, which bore a deeper understanding of its character "service". Twelve years have past since it was played for the first time, and during the passing years it has kept a high audience rating and formed a relatively stable bounds of audience. According to experts and scholars, the renson for its popularity is the humanitarian spirit and caring that were embodied everywhere in the program; and a kind of cherishing and caring which originated from the participating of the interviewees' daily life and inner world. (This kind of participating derived from respecting and caring.) Differ from former topical or documentary programs, the main concern of "Common Story" is ordinary people, then it concerns people in a plebeian angle of view, which is a reflection of plebian consciousness, and differs from the long—term formed official angle of view in tele media. Former producer Chen Meng required all his crew members as following " Give up your so—called duty and deeper consideration for culture; care about your interviewees as your friends and relatives. Then you will see the honest duty and deepest criticisms; the ancient Chinese saying, 'Doing everying by doing nothing'", is the concrete reflection of this kind of plebeian consciousness. The emergy of mass documentary, which is represented by "Common Story", is a historical necessity as the development of documentary tele media in China. "Common Story" tries to "achieve humanitarian caring and leave the future a history composed of ordinary people in the context of a swiftly changing times. The historical mission of China's mass documentary is destined to focus on and perspect reforms of modern society in China , to write a video history for ordinary people.
