Unexpected events, which happen suddenly, are impossible for the public to predict and control, make tremendous impact on the society, with the characteristics of suddenness, destruction and emergency. Reports of unexpected events frequently seen on mass media in recent years have become people's focus of their concern and discussion. People come to realize that since China's open-up to the outside world, especially in the past decade, reports of unexpected events on mass media become more and more with more effectiveness and information. The above change is closely connected with the current political and economic environment and the reform of news media as well.Because of the key elements namely effectiveness, importance, abnormality and conflict embodied in themselves, unexpected events are well worth reporting. Besides, there are also important social values in unexpected events. The social value is the function of informing and warning after unexpected events being reported and news media is an important platform for the press to realize its function of informing and warning.Unexpected events are favored by the western press due to their great conflict. Classical cases of successful reports of unexpected events can be found easily in the western news history. Since 1949 the founding of New China, domestic reports of unexpected events have undergone three stages, that is the propaganda period before 1980's, the breakthrough period between 1980's and 1990's and the development period after...
