The basic characteristic of image coding technique is presented and the wavelet transform, one of the key techniques in modern image coding, is researched in this paper. After analyzing its algorism and main problems in its hardware implementation, line-based DWT, a VLSI implementation scheme of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) with high performance and low hardware cost, is proposed to meet the need of real time imago coding. The main architecture and some details, such as the lifting scheme, image boundary processing and memory cost, is discussed in this paper.The architecture of the line-based DWT VLSI implementation is described synthesizable in VHDL. The synthesis, simulation and on-line debugging of this design is implemented with the assistance of EDA tools. And the evaluation is given after the results comparison of different schemes.
