With the development of Multimedia technique, image compression plays an important role in the storage and transfer of mass image data. A favorable image compression technique can not only achieve high compression ratio and fidelity but also meet such demands such as progression transmission.Firstly, the development course of the image compression theories and standards is introduced. And we also compare several basic technique for image compression and analyze the theories and methods involved. Finally, a factual image compression method based on wavelet transform is offered. The main work is listed as follows:1) In this part, the orthogonal Daubechies wavelet bases from 1 to 4 are analyzed. And a simulation result also is shown. So, the four Daubechies wavelet base is chosen to decompose images.2) The embedded zero-tree wavelet algorithm, which is proposed by Shapiro, is analyzed. Regarding to its shortcomings, a new quantization method based on zero-tree is presented. In addition, this method needs to match the HVS characteristics.3) Furtherly, an entropy encoder can compress the quantified values losslessly, and give a better overall compression result, too. In this paper, a new adaptive arithmetic coding scheme is given.According to the analysis of reconstruct image, using the algorithm can get an excellent image compression result. At the same time, the main advantage of the encoding method, which can allow a target bit rate to be met exactly, is that the encoder can stop encoding at any point. Similarly, the decoder stopping decoding at any point results in the image which would have been produced at the rate of the truncated bit stream.
