The theory and the technology of backup system are deeply researched based on the model of unified storage network virtualization. A file-level network backup system is designed and implemented; a file transfer mechanism that optimizes the backup system is also designed, and it improves system performance.Storage over IP and storage virtualization technology are the most important technology at the trend of the storage-network convergence. Through introducing the architecture of storage-network and storage over IP technology, we introduce the detail of storage virtualization technology which is the key technology of building Unified Storage Network. And then we present the scheme of USN, which merges the block I/O services and the file I/O services based on the TCP/IP, and afterwards analyze the data stream of the USN combining with storage virtualization.A file-level network backup system is designed and implemented based upon USN. It is the kernel service of USN. Through analyzing the principle and structure of common network backup model, some critical techniques of network backup are thoroughly discussed such as LAN-free Backup, Server-free Backup, Snapshot, Mirror. We implement a USN-based Network Backup System successfully. The whole system includes three software modules. Backup Server module includes task agent. Client module includes backup source agent and restore target agent. Storage resource module includes backup target agent and restore source agent. According to the analysis of the performance of Network Backup System based on experiments at the environment of LAN and Internet, we conclude that the speed of Network Backup System is higher than that of ftp in our test environment.
