With the rapid development of Internet and information technology, traditional storage technology based on servers can't meet increasing requirement of storage. The Storage Area Network(SAN) is a latest storage technology based on storage network, and which can provide huge capacity of data storage and high performance services of data transfers for users and enterprises.Fiber Channel(FC) is a main interconnection technology to build the SAN because of its characteristics of high-speed, low-delay, long-distance connectivity and its topology structure which can cover the advantages of I/O and network. It is important to implement effective management and safe share in heterogeneous environment, and Storage Virtualization(SV) is a hot technology to achieve this purpose.In this thesis, we firstly introduce the development of storage technologies, fiber channel protocol and SAN storage virtualization. Then we present a 8×8 switch design, with each port's high speed serial data rate of 2.125Gbps.The detailed logical design and physical implement of the switch card are also given. Based on the FC Switch, I give the scheme of building a Fiber channel Storage Area Network(FC SAN). After a comprehensive analysis of the present technology of Storage Virtualization, a novel scheme for virtualization of FC SAN file system has been proposed based on the combination of Distributed File System theory and FC SAN system architecture. The key technology of SAN file system protocol is discussed and designed in this thesis.Then I present the software function structure of client and metadata server of the SAN file system.Finally, A client/server software prototype for testing the feasibility of metadata communication protocol between client and server is proposed and we present suggestions of future work.
