Since the application of the enterprise informationlization has came into an advanced stage, the time for integrating the subsystem has come, and the requirement of processing the distributed data occured. Client/Server(C/S), which is very popular in 1990s, is a 2 tier software architecture application, and now the limitations of this architecture have appeared more and more, what's more, some of them are stumbling blocks in the development of the enterprise informationlization: C/S architecture can not face the problem of interacting with the different platform; process refactory, which is brought by the inconstancy of the management of the enterprise, forces the enterprise to cost much on the maintenance of the system; the number of the client that C/S architecture serve can not satisfy the requirement after the size of the enterprise expands; security under C/S architecture can not be guaranteed and so on.3 tier, even N tier architecture was put forward to solve the problem that C/S architecture can not handle. The multi-tier architecture subdivides the responsibilities and functions of the C/S architecture, putting familiar responsibilities and functions together in one tier, providing interfaces for the other tier, and then the system will be built reusable and loosely coupled. Furthermore, some common issues, such as security management, transaction, is get away and become a system service that may be supplied to the system developer.Multi-tier architecture based on the J2EE middleware technology, adopt component, container management and service mode. By right of the advantage of the multi-tier architecture, it supplies the blue print to solve the complicated enterprise application that C/S architecture can not do.This paper starts with the study of the kernal technologies of the multi-tier architecture and the software engineering method, combining a successful case which uses the multi-tier architecture to handling the distributed data of the enterprise, author puts forward some basic principles for the subdivision of the tier, and proves that software based on N-tier architecture is much more superior and expansible than C/S architecture, and N-tier architecture if the future of the software architecture.
