Urban Rail Transit is a mass transportation mode that plays important role in the mitigation of traffic congestion in the urban area with high population density. The success of construction of Urban Rail Transit projects requires multi-discipline technologies. Engineering Survey, a critical component of the project construction, provides foundation for the success of those projects. The goal of this thesis is to develop an information management system for engineering survey of rail transit projects. The development of this system is based on a real project "ChongQing Light Rail project Jiao-Xin Section", one of top 10 important projects in western China now, and is targeted for the application to general Urban Rail Transit projects. First, the author reviewed the detailed survey tasks, project features, working flow chart, and management mode for the project "ChongQing Light Rail project Jiao-Xin Section", and then conducted the requirement analysis and feasibility analysis of the information management system for this project. Based on these analyses, the objective, principles, methodologies for the system development were determined, and the research tasks and schedule was developed. Second, the author applied a popular tool "Unified Modeling Language (UML)" with combination of Software Development principles, Objective- orientation method to the demand analysis, the system design, and the coding of the proposed system, aiming for an advanced and practical information management system that combines engineering survey technology, computer technology, network technology, and information technology. Finally, the system was evaluated in terms of system quality, technology level,work efficiency and system use benefit during its application to the project "ChongQing Light Rail project Jiao-Xin Section". It was found the proposed system is professional, efficient, user-friendly, and beneficial.
