Network Management System - NMS, is an important part of CMT system. It takes charge of operation, administration and maintenance of the network devices. NMS in CMT can be divided into two categories: one for standard Internet devices, the other for user-defined devices. NMS for user-defined devices adopts user-defined communication protocol, and NMS for standard Internet devices, such as Ethernet switches, routers and PDSN subsystem in CMT, adopts SNMP. This paper mainly introduces the solution of NMS for standard Internet devices, including the implementation of SNMP Manager and SNMP Agent in PDSN.In the first part of this article, we simply introduce SNMP and the architecture and function of NMS, and then in next part we put emphasis on the implementation of SNMP Manager, also we shall introduce the SNMP Agent simply. The main jobs of this paper in the implementation of SNMP Manager are listed as follows: The implementation of configuration management, including dynamic and visualizable topology management. Comprehensive network devices management, including the adding, deleting and browsing of correlative devices, the configuration of MIB and the operations based on SNMP. Real-time alarms handling, including the queuing, classifying and locating of alarms, sound alarm and saving alarms in database or files. The implementation of statistic, including the collection and saving of statistic information. The implementation of performance management. The implementation of SNMP Agent is combined with PDSN subsystem, and we shall put emphasis on the collection of management information and the design and implementation of MIB. Security is another important problem in NMS. In chapter 5, we shall particularly introduce the security measure in SNMPv3, and in the last chapter, a new solution based on B/S will be brought out as a future plan.
